What it means: A card-present transaction where the issuer says the chip (EMV) liability shift applies — e.g. a counterfeit or lost/stolen card was used and the transaction was not processed as a chip (or chip-and-PIN) transaction.
How to respond: Show the transaction was processed with the chip read (and PIN where applicable), or that it was not a card-present transaction. Online-only merchants rarely receive these codes; if you do, check the transaction details with your processor.
Stripe usually labels this dispute as: fraudulent (check the reason shown on your dispute — Stripe maps network codes to its own categories).
DisputeDesk provides general information and document preparation help. It is not legal advice, and we do not guarantee any dispute outcome — the card issuer decides. Reason-code names and rules change; always check the dispute details in your Stripe or Shopify dashboard and the card network's current rules.
